I am always amazed by new things & technology. So when i bought my N82 last March, i was pleasantly surprise to know it has GPS, and AGPS (though not really know what AGPS is). But i had thought using GPS need to pay monthly subscription fees, or something, so i never explore the Maps function. Then mid this yr i went to KL for my friend's wedding wif my grp of close friends, & 1 of them use his handphone as GPS device. Only then i know using GPS is free. But i didn't really explore until few days ago my cousins bought the 6110, & they show me the GPS function, which the shop staff help explain to them briefly how to use. So after some fiddling, let me share here, esp. for those who are not comfortable to play with GPS in ur N82, esp older batch without the new Ovi maps.
1. Download installer file of Nokia's Maps UPDATER, not Loader, from Nokia website on Nokia Map. Dun worry if the page shows Ovi stuff, its correct . Install in your computer.
2. Connect N82 to computer thru' PC Suite mode. Run Nokia Maps Updater. This will install Maps 3.0 if u are using an old N82. Maps 3.0 is faster when moving about in the map than version 2. Old outdated maps will be deleted, & new ones in. Beware! May take a few hours!!
3. Once done, remove N82 to use. Start up Maps in N82, 1st time will prompt u if u want to connect online when startup. Select NEVER (if u only want to use GPS which is free, else AGPS may be used, and that needs $). Should u strike lottery & want to try, u can always go online easily...
4. To be on the safe side, use Map Loader to load the maps you need if you are going overseas:
(a) Download Nokia Map Loader installer file. Install the program.
(b) Connect N82 to computer thru' Data Transfer mode. Run Nokia Map Loader.
(c) Select the maps u need. Avoid voices, navigation if you just need GPS id only.
There, done! Now you can use your N82 as GPS. I tested it today, went to Marine Parade, and it located my position very fast... Hope this helps...
